From the deck of your private yacht, islands appear—evolving forms held in bright sunshine above impossibly clear, royal blue seas. As the ship rounds bleached cliffs, forest mounds and pebble beaches, a port comes into view: a medieval walled town, perched like a captain on the prow of his ship, virtually unchanged through six centuries or more. This is Dalmatia, the long archipelago coast of the eastern Adriatic coveted by Greek settlers, Roman and Byzantine emperors, Venetian doges and Ottoman caliphs. Our voyage aboard the 34-guest Callisto is unquestionably the ideal way to explore this region, and our itinerary is unlike any other organized tour of the Adriatic, exploring not only the justly celebrated cities of Dubrovnik and Split, but also farther flung outposts like Skadar Lake National Park, and the town of Kotor in Montenegro, reached through southern Europe’s only fjord. Finally, we will stroll through the lavender-scented lanes of Hvar, which is quietly becoming the Mediterranean’s newest Riviera. Swimming stops at secluded bays add to the enjoyment of the voyage.
Day 1 : DUBROVNIK, CROATIA | EMBARK
Arrive in Dubrovnik and transfer to the port to board Callisto. Overnight aboard ship docked in port.
Day 2 : DUBROVNIK
Dubrovnik is one of Europe’s best preserved medieval cities. Take a tour of the old city, beginning with the Franciscan Monastery and Pharmacy, which dates back to the 15th century. Continue to the Dominican Monastery and the Baroque cathedral. Also view the wonderful interior courtyard of the Rector’s Palace and the Cathedral of Our Lady. After an afternoon at leisure to enjoy Dubrovnik on your own, set sail for Montenegro.
Day 3 : BAR | SKADAR LAKE NATIONAL PARK | STARI BAR | BAR, MONTENEGRO
Arrive in Montenegro’s port town of Bar and drive to the Skadar Lake National Park, which includes Skadar Lake, the largest in the Balkans. Framed by mountains, the pristine oasis is home to more than 270 species of birds, some of them rare. Explore this enchanting spot by boat, including several of its tiny islands dotted with old churches. After a lunch of fresh seafood at a lakeside restaurant, continue to Stari (Old) Bar, one of the most arresting sites of the entire region. Huddled on a hill, Stari Bar is encircled by 15th- to 16th-century walls that bear witness to its past as a wealthy and important center. Now abandoned, the ghost town’s evocative ruins include medieval palaces and churches, among other excellently preserved constructions. After sailing from Bar, Callisto will anchor at a secluded bay where guests may swim in the azure waters from the ship’s marina.
Day 4 : KOTOR, MONTENEGRO | SIPANSKA BAY | KORCULA, CROATIA
Callisto navigates the deep, fjord-like Bay of Kotor to reach the port town of the same name, located at the head of a bay beneath towering mountains. One of the quaintest towns along the Dalmatian coast, Kotor is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. The town’s fortifications and most of its monuments, which we will visit on a walking tour, date from the time of Venetian rule. Later, enjoy a swim in Sipanska Bay before Callisto reaches Korcula Island.
Day 5 : KORCULA
On a walking tour, note the dominating Venetian influence in St. Mark’s Cathedral, which houses works by Tintoretto, and visit the Cathedral Treasury, Bishop’s Palace, the Town Museum (located in the 16th-century Gabriellis Palace), the Church of All Saints and the Icon Museum.
Day 6 : PLOCE, CROATIA | MOSTAR, BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA | PLOCE | ZAOSTROG, CROATIA
Sail to Ploce for an excursion to Mostar, which became a thriving center in the 15th century under the Ottoman Turks. Admire the ethereally graceful Stari Most bridge, originally built in 1566, and the nearby Tabacica Mosque. In the afternoon, enjoy a swim off the ship’s stern near Zaostrog, and then sail for Split.
Day 7 : SPLIT | HVAR
Arrive in Split, an ancient city centered around the formidable Palace of Diocletian, built in A.D. 295. The large, well-preserved palace contains within its walls Split’s old town, making it the only Roman palace that has been continuously inhabited since Roman times. In the afternoon, sail to the island of Hvar and enjoy a swimming stop en route. Explore Hvar’s lavender-scented lanes, stopping at the Renaissance cloister, the old refectory of the Franciscan monastery, the Cathedral and the Arsenal inside—Europe’s oldest theater.
Day 8 : HVAR | PAKLENI
Hvar is a fertile island of pale stone houses surrounded by rosemary, lavender and laurel. A tour of the island’s principal town includes the 17th-century Municipal Theater; the Venetian Loggia; and the Franciscan Monastery, with its small gallery. Enjoy an afternoon swim in the Pakleni islands, the most fetching part of the Hvar riviera.
Day 9 : DUBROVNIK | DISEMBARK
Ship Description: Callisto
The finest, most memorable voyages take place aboard a luxurious private yacht. On a private yacht one is part of a small, select, sociable community. Cabins are more like guest rooms in a fine home -- beautifully furnished, comfortably arranged, and complete with the little extras one would expect from a thoughtful host. The yacht's public areas, whether indoors or out on deck, are warm, inviting places where friends meet for conversation, a drink, or to pass a pleasant hour with a good book. The cuisine is superb. And the service is considerate and congenial.
This is the kind of exceptional experience you'll enjoy aboard the Callisto, a beautiful oceangoing yacht that is the fulfillment of a traveler's dream.
Like a fine country house, Callisto is furnished with rich fabrics, handsome woodwork, gleaming brass, rare antiques, and fine works of art. The guest list is limited to no more than 34 individuals -- a group large enough to bring together an interesting mix of travelers, but small enough to foster a genuine spirit of camaraderie.
In addition to all of the other pleasures of the Callisto, the ship's guests enjoy an advantage that eludes travelers aboard big ships: because Callisto is a yacht, it can visit those unspoiled islets, pristine beaches, and intimate coves and harbors that have been familiar to fishermen and other sailors of small craft for thousands of years, but which are inaccessible to large commercial cruise liners.
Callisto was designed with the comfort of her guests in mind. All staterooms are exterior with large windows (portholes on Daphne Deck) that look out on the sea and the yacht's various ports of call; they are air conditioned and feature generous storage space, a telephone, two-channel radio, and a marble bath with shower. The yacht's public areas include a spacious lounge; a dining room in which all guests are accommodated at a single unassigned seating; two broad decks for sunbathing and dining alfresco; and a swimming platform at the yacht's stern. The Callisto flies the Greek flag and is served by a crew of 18.
