The rivers and inlets of Canada were its first highways—not only for the Native Americans tribes, but also for the French and English explorers, traders, missionaries, and colonists who followed these waterways into the interior of a grand new world. Explore the lovely coast of the Maritime Provinces, then cruise up the broad St. Lawrence River to Montreal and Quebec City, and ultimately into Lake Ontario. One of the pleasures of exploring eastern Canada is discovering majestic landscapes as wild and unspoiled as when Jacques Cartier and Samuel de Champlain first saw them four centuries ago. You’ll find that Bonaventure Island and Witless Bay are still the breeding ground for millions of seabirds. And cruising the Bras d’Or, Cape Breton Island’s spectacular inland sea, and the Saguenay River, a Canadian fjord that is home to Beluga whales, is like stepping back in time when there were no towns here but native villages and no ships on these waters but birch bark canoes. Every day brings you into contact with the grand sweep of Canadian history. Quebec City, with its cobblestone streets, great stone battlements, and picturesque old homes, shops, and chapels, recall the glory days of France’s empire in the New World. Cosmopolitan Montreal, while still primarily French in culture, reflects generations of immigration from across the globe. And the English and Scottish influence in Canada is beautifully preserved in the charming towns of Breton Island and Prince Edward Island.
Day 1 : St John's Newfoundland / Embark
Fly to St. John’s and transfer to Clelia II. Explore this lovely capital city on your own.
Day 2 : St. John's / Cape Spear National Historic Site
Drive along the magnificent coast to visit Cape Spear National Historic Site. Enjoy a nature walk to Petty Harbour and board local boats to Bay Bulls for an excursion to Witless Bay Ecological Reserve, where millions of seabirds come to breed every summer.
Day 3 : At Sea
Enjoy a relaxing day at sea as Clelia II cruises in the Gulf of St. Lawrence toward Nova Scotia’s Cape Breton Island.
Day 4 : Baddeck, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia
Navigating the lake district of the Bras d’Or, Clelia II takes us through the stunning scenery of an area known as the Scottish Highlands of North America. Visit Baddeck, whose beauty motivated Alexander Graham Bell to use it as his summer retreat. Further explore Cape Breton’s scenic beauty as we discover the Cabot Trail, the historic route that linked the isolated Scottish, English, and Acadian communities during colonial times.
Day 5 : Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island
Today visit Prince Edward Island and enjoy a panoramic tour of the island, including the colonial seaport of Charlottetown and its historic Province House. Continue to Prince Edward Island National Park, where we will see the Anne of Green Gables House—the inspiration for Lucy Maud Montgomery’s classic novel—and take in some of the 200 bird species inhabiting the parkland.
Day 6 : Gaspe / Perce / Ile Bonaventure
Gaspe, on the eastern coast of the remote peninsula of the same name, is where Jacques Cartier first claimed Canada for France. From “Land’s End,” visit the National Park of Bonaventure Island and Perce Rock. Carved by volcanic action, Perce Rock is a continuation of the Appalachian Mountains, which extend from the peninsula to Alabama. Rising out of the sea to a solitary height of almost 300 feet, the dramatic sight of Perce Rock attracts visitors from all over the world. Its neighbor, Bonaventure Island, houses a migratory bird sanctuary with the largest concentration of Northern Gannets in North America.
Day 7 : At Sea / Saquenay River
Relax aboard Clelia II and attend a lecture by one of our onboard experts as we navigate the Saguenay River, once an important trade route. Spend time on deck as we approach the mouth of the Sanguenay River, where Beluga whales, Bald and Golden Eagles, and Peregrine Falcons may be seen.
Day 8 : Quebec City
Quebec City sits high above the narrowest point of the St. Lawrence River. With its cobblestoned lanes, country squares, and outdoor cafes, Quebec City remains one of the most romantic places in North America. Discover the Upper and Lower Towns, the Citadel, the Plains of Abraham, and the Place Royale.
Day 9 : Montreal
The second-largest French-speaking city in the Western world after Paris, Montreal is one of North America’s most vibrant and cosmopolitan cities. Known for its fashionable boutiques, gourmet restaurants and vivacious nightlife, Montreal strikes a dynamic balance between the avant-garde and the charms of the Old World. Our tour includes a stroll through the cobblestoned streets of the Old Quarter; the resplendent Notre Dame Basilica; and Mont-Royal Park, where the Iroquois established their original settlement. The afternoon is at leisure during which you may wish to visit the outstanding Montreal Museum of Fine Arts or the Chateau Ramezay Museum.
Day 10 : The St. Lawrence Seaway
Today begin your transit through the seven locks of the historic St. Lawrence Seaway. Enjoy lectures while sailing toward Kingston.
Day 11 : Kingston / Thousand Islands / Lake Ontario
This morning board a local boat for an excursion to the Thousand Islands, a scenic region that has been a popular vacation destination for more than a century. In the afternoon Clelia II cruises Lake Ontario.
Day 12 : Rochester, New York
From Rochester, drive for the day to Niagara Falls, one of North America’s most spectacular natural wonders. Alternatively, explore Rochester, known for its fine architecture and spacious boulevards. Among other sites, visit the International Museum of Photography at George Eastman House and the Memorial Art Gallery—one of the country’s finest regional art museums, whose collection includes paintings by Monet, Cezanne, Matisse, Homer, and others.
Day 13 : Toronto, Canada / Disembark
Disembark Clelia II and transfer to the airport for return flights home.
