"Architecture," Goethe said, "is frozen music." And when exquisite music is heard in magnificent surroundings, one is immersed in a universe of wonder. It is our pleasure to invite you on a musical adventure from Athens to Venice, where you will have the chance to hear special concerts in the most spectacular ancient, medieval and Renaissance settings located along the coasts of Greece, and its islands, Albania, Montenegro and Croatia; as well as enjoy onboard chamber recitals while the ship sails the indigo waters and the Aegean, Ionian and Adriatic Seas.
Virtually every day will feature a musical performance by our extraordinary onboard musicians and performers. We are thrilled to have Lowell Liebermann on our voyage, one of America’s most important composers, whose work is regularly performed by the world’s most distinguished orchestras. Noted by The New York Times for being “as much of a traditionalist as an innovator,” and described by Time magazine as “a composer unafraid of grand gestures and openhearted lyricism,” Maestro Liebermann’s music is known both for its technical command and audience appeal. Robert White, the celebrated tenor, whose long career has included singing for six U.S. Presidents, will also be joining us, as well as Timothy Fain, the “charismatic young violinist with a matinee idol profile, strong musical instincts, and first rate chops” (Boston Globe). The ensemble of eminent musicians is rounded out by soprano, Brenda Rae; pianist, William Hobbs; cellist, Scott Kluksdahl and flutist, Marya Martin.
Day 1 : VENICE, ITALY | EMBARK
Arrive in Venice and board Corinthian II. Quite possibly the world’s most unusual and romantic city, lovely canalled Venice is a feast for the senses. At the height of its prosperity, this incomparable city of water and light possessed an empire that stretched throughout the eastern Mediterranean. Overnight docked aboard ship.
Day 2 : SPLIT, CROATIA
Following a morning at sea, arrive in Split, an ancient city centered around the formidable Palace of Diocletian, built in A.D. 295. An extensive structure, much of which is well-preserved, the palace contains within its walls Split’s medieval town, making it the only palace that has been continuously inhabited since Roman times. Enjoy an evening concert in the splendid setting of Diocletian’s Palace.
Day 3 : DUBROVNIK
Explore Dubrovnik, one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval cities and a splendid repository of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque art and architecture. Visit the Rector’s Palace, the Franciscan Monastery and its garden, the Dominican monastery and other buildings. The afternoon is at leisure, followed by a concert at the Sponza Palace. Built in 1516 using a combination of Renaissance and Gothic styles, the Palace is ornamented with graceful arcades and intricate tracery—an idyllic setting for the evening’s performance.
Day 4 : AT SEA
Day 5 : PALERMO, SICILY, ITALY
In the morning, drive to Monreale to visit its famed Norman cathedral and seek out the Cappella Palatina, a wonder of Byzantine-Arab-Norman artistry, with dazzling mosaics, an exquisitely carved wooden ceiling and magnificent inlaid marble floors and walls. In the afternoon, tour the private Palazzo Raffadali, a Gothic palace with 17th-century interiors, followed by a special concert in the palace’s grand salon.
Day 6 : NAPLES | POMPEII | NAPLES
This morning, we offer a choice of excursions from Naples. Visit Pompeii, a city devastated and preserved by the A.D. 79 volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius. More than 200 years of excavations have revealed an extraordinary wealth of information that has become the foundation of our knowledge of domestic life in the Roman Empire. Visit the Forum, Stabian Baths and the Temples of Apollo and Jupiter. Alternatively, tour the Palazzo Capodimonte, which houses the National Gallery of Naples and its rich collections of paintings by Italian and other masters. In the afternoon enjoy a concert at a historic site in Naples.
Day 7 : ELBA
This large, mountainous island off the coast of Italy is renowned as Napoleon’s first place of exile, and the place from which he staged his astonishing return to power. Corinthian II enters the wide bay of Portoferraio, guarded by a 16th-century fortress and an old lighthouse. Visit the Villa dei Mulini, Napoleon’s residence which preserves the Emperor’s library and some personal items, and the Church of the Misericordia, where a Mass is offered for Napoleon every year.
Day 8 : NICE | ST.-PAUL-DE-VENCE | NICE, FRANCE
From Nice—renowned for its lovely gardens, splendid sea-views and chic boulevards—
visit delightful St.-Paul-de-Vence, a medieval village that became a favorite artists’ retreat in the 1920s. Largely rebuilt in 1537 by Francois I, the old fortified town reveals the ramparts that once defended it, while the heights still afford a spectacular view of the mountains and Mediterranean Sea. Visit the Maeght Foundation, whose modern building blends harmoniously with its surroundings and displays an acclaimed collection of 20th-century works by artists including Braque, Chagall, Miro and Picasso. After lunch aboard ship, enjoy a tour of Nice, including the celebrated Musee Matisse and enjoy a concert at a historical site.
Day 9 : MARSEILLE | AIX-EN-PROVENCE | MARSEILLE | AT SEA
Travel to Aix-en-Provence, the first Roman settlement in Gaul, immortalized by the works of Cezanne. Tour the Old City, down the leafy Cours Mirabeau, noting the perfect classical proportions of the Hotel de Ville en route to the Cathedral of St-Sauveur, with its medieval art treasures. Continue to Cezanne’s old studio, which remains as it was at the time of the Impressionist’s death in 1906. Afternoon at sea with a farewell recital this evening.
