From mythic prehistoric sites to magnificent Greek monuments, and from grand Roman cities to medieval villages overlooking the sea, the Mediterranean features layer upon layer of history and culture set beautifully upon azure waters. In these storied lands, the art and architecture from myriad civilizations coexist. Centuries of history imbue these shores, from ancient structures that remain remarkably intact to beautiful seaside walled towns that have retained their original character and architecture. On this voyage aboard Corinthian II, we will also encounter the two main powers that coexisted, sometimes peacefully, at other times in sharp competition, in the eastern Mediterranean during the medieval period, the Byzantine Empire and Venice. Beginning in Istanbul—old Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire—we set sail for fabled Troy, where ongoing archaeological work has revealed the remains of a series of towns spanning the centuries, and continue through the Aegean, Ionian and Adriatic Seas ending our voyage in Venice, undoubtedly one of the world’s most unusual cities

Day 1 : ISTANBUL, TURKEY

Arrive in Istanbul and transfer to the Hilton Hotel. Welcome cocktail reception tonight.

Day 2 : ISTANBUL | EMBARK

Tour the city’s principal Byzantine and Ottoman landmarks, including the Basilica of Hagia Sophia, the Topkapi Palace, the Blue Mosque and the Grand Bazaar, where time at leisure will be provided. Late in the afternoon, transfer to the port to board Corinthian II. Sail in the evening.

Day 3 : CANAKKALE | TROY | CANAKKALE

Guarding the strategic narrows of the Hellespont, or Dardanelles, Canakkale is our gateway for Troy, where ongoing archaeological excavations have revealed nine different layers of cities superimposed in rings on a massive mound rising above the “windswept” Plain of Ilium. It was to one of these cities, as legend has it, that the Greeks fought the Trojans as told by Homer in his Illiad. The city of King Priam finally fell to Odysseus’ ruse of the Trojan Horse.

Day 4 : KUSADASI | EPHESUS | KUSADASI

From Kusadasi, our excursion leads to Ephesus. Renowned as the center of worship of the mother-goddess Cybele, later known as Artemis, it was also the site where St. Paul addressed the Ephesians. Excavations continue and archaeologists are restoring the Terrace Houses, which offer a glimpse of the daily lives of the Ephesians. See the stunning facade of the Library of Celsus; the temple of Hadrian; the Great Amphitheater; and the Basilica of St. John, built by Justinian on the site of the Apostle’s tomb.

Day 5 : SANTORINI, GREECE

In the second millennium B.C., volcanic eruptions shrouded the island of Santorini in a blanket of pumice and ash, and collapsed the island into a fractured caldera. This ultimately produced the wild, otherworldly, multihued beauty of the island, while sending the Minoan civilization into irreversible decline. Take a cable-car ride up to the whitewashed homes, shops, cafes and churches of Phira. Then visit the Nomikos Exhibition, where excellent reproductions of Akrotiri’s Minoan frescoes are on display, and continue to the Prehistoric History Museum of Thera.

Day 6 : HERAKLION | |KNOSSOS | RETHYMNON, CRETE

Arrive at Heraklion and journey to the Palace of Knossos, which exemplifies the brilliance and refinement of the Minoan civilization. Knossos is a labyrinth of corridors, stairways and chambers decorated with frescoes. After a visit to the Heraklion Museum, drive to Agreco, an authentic working Cretan farm in beautiful surroundings for a lunch of Cretan specialties. Continue to Rethymnon, where ancient minarets, Venetian and Turkish houses and a medieval fortress intermingle to compose one of Crete’s most delightful towns.

Day 7 : PYLOS | METHONI | PYLOS

Arrive in Pylos, for an excursion to the impressive Mycenaean palace known as the Palace of King Nestor. Alternatively travel to Methoni to explore its massive Citadel, a formidable Venetian fortress that served as a staging post for pilgrims en route to the Holy Land.

Day 8 : SARANDA | BUTRINT | SARANDA, ALBANIA

From the Albanian port of Saranda, drive to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Butrint. Inhabited since prehistoric times, the city was founded by the Trojans, or so claimed the poet Virgil. A gem of an archeological site, its ruins span 2,500 years, and include, among other buildings, the remains of a Greek acropolis, a Roman theater, a 6th-century baptistery and a fortress erected by the warlord Ali Pasha Tepelena in the 19th century.

Day 9 : KOTOR, MONTENEGRO

Corinthian II navigates the deep, fjord-like Bay of Kotor to reach the port town of the same name, located at the head of the bay beneath towering mountains. One of the most quaint and best preserved medieval towns along the Dalmatian coast, Kotor is a designated UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. The town’s fortifications and most of its monuments, which we will visit on a walking tour, date from the time of Venetian rule.

Day 10 : DUBROVNIK, CROATIA

Arrive this morning amid Dubrovnik’s impressive medieval walls and battlements. Visit the Franciscan Monastery, Dominican Monastery and the Baroque Cathedral, which contains works by Titian and Andrea del Sarto. Also, view the wonderful courtyard of the Rector’s Palace, and the Cathedral of Our Lady, known for its rich treasury.

Day 11 : SPLIT

Originally a Greco-Illyrian settlement called Aspalathos, Split is an ancient city centered around the formidable Palace of Diocletian, built in A.D. 295. An extensive structure, much of which is well-preserved, the palace contains within its walls Split’s medieval town, making it the only palace that has been continuously inhabited since Roman times.

Day 12 : RAVENNA | VENICE, ITALY

Call in Ravenna this morning. In the 5th century A.D., with Rome in decline, King Honorarius moved the imperial capital to this provincial town, which flowered as one of the great Byzantine centers of Europe. Visit the Tomb of Galla Placidia, the Church of San Vital, Sant’ Apollinaire Nuovo and Sant’ Apollinaire in Classe. Sail for Venice in the afternoon, arriving in the early evening. Overnight aboard ship docked in Venice.
