This is a voyage to coastlines and islands, to ancient cities and towns whose fortunes have faded but whose beauty remains undimmed. This is a voyage to lush historic treasures and artistic havens of the Western Mediterranean Sea. The Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Moors and Normans all held sway here, and their memory lingers in the splendid monuments and gilded cathedrals that ring these aquamarine waters. In Pisa and Florence we visit iconic sites, from the leaning tower at Campo dei Miracoli to the majestic Duomo. Sailing aboard Corinthian II to the islands of Corsica and Sardinia, we discover a rich layering of civilization and nature that is as majestic as Bonifacio’s limestone cliffs and as ancient as the Nuraghic complex at Barumini’s Su Naraxi. Tunis beckons with its acclaimed Bardo Museum and neighboring settlement of Phoenician-founded Carthage, while haunting Pompeii invites us to explore domestic life under the Roman Empire. Finally, our path to the art and mysteries of a vanished age leads, of course, to Rome.

Day 1 : ROME | CIVITAVECCHIA, ITALY | EMBARK

Arrive in Rome and transfer to Civitavecchia, Rome’s deepwater port, to embark Corinthian II.

Day 2 : LIVORNO | PISA AND LUCCA OR FLORENCE | LIVORNO

Dock in Livorno and visit Pisa. Our tour will feature the medieval masterpieces of the Campo dei Miracoli including the cathedral and the leaning tower, as well as the Medici Arsenal, which houses the fleet of nine well-preserved Roman ships dating from between the 2nd century B.C. and the 5th century A.D.—a stupendous record of classical shipbuilding from the days of the Republic to the end of the Empire. They were found in Pisa’s harbor in 1998, with perishable cargoes preserved. From Pisa drive to the delightful Tuscan town of Lucca, home to one of the finest collections of Romanesque churches and medieval palaces if Italy. Alternatively, take a full-day excursion to Florence. Birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, Florence is a city where art, literature, science and philosophy achieved great heights. Our visit includes the splendid Duomo, crowned by Brunelleschi’s distinctive dome; the Piazza della Signoria, dominated by the Palazzo Vecchio and the Loggia dei Lanzi; and one of Florence’s renowned museums.

Day 3 : NICE, FRANCE

Morning arrival in Nice for an excursion to St.- Paul-de-Vence and the remarkable Maeght Foundation and Museum. The Foundation’s modern building, designed by Catalan artist Josep-Lluis Sert, blends harmoniously with the surrounding nature and displays the Riviera’s finest collection of works by 20th-century artists, including Bonnard, Braque, Calder, Chagall, Giacometti, Leger, Miro, and Picasso. The Foundation also boasts a lovely chapel with an exceptional stained-glass window by Braque.

Day 4 : BONIFACIO, CORSICA, FRANCE

Corinthian II navigates the scenic, fjordlike waterway leading to Bonifacio, built on spectacular high cliffs on Corsica’s south coast. Stroll through the striking town, with its winding medieval lanes and brightly colored houses adorned with imaginative family crests. Admire the fine Gothic architecture and dramatic scenery from the limestone cliffs, facing the sea.

Day 5 : CAGLIARI, SARDINIA, ITALY

From Cagliari, Sardinia’s lively capital, take an excursion to the Su Nuraxi complex at Barumini, a defensive structure dating back to the 2nd millennium B.C. and fortified under the Carthaginians in the 1st millennium. Distinguished by conical defensive towers and corbel-vaulted interior chambers, this exemplar of Bronze Age architecture is a designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spend the afternoon touring Cagliari.

Day 6 : TUNIS | CARTHAGE | TUNIS, TUNISIA

Tunis, the capital of Tunisia, has a cosmopolitan, almost Western atmosphere unlike most cities in North Africa. Travel to Carthage, originally the great Phoenician center of the Western Mediterranean and subsequently conquered by the Romans in 146 B.C. and refounded as a Roman colony that flourished into the early Middle Ages. We visit the ruined Baths of Antinonus; the Christian Basilica; the Amphitheater, where many Christians were martyred; and the cemetery where thousands of Carthaginian children were sacrificed to the goddess Tanit. Return to Tunis to visit the Bardo Museum, one of the world’s finest collections of Punic, Roman and early Christian art, including magnificent mosaics from throughout Tunisia, and explore the medina and its colorful souks.

Day 7 : TRAPANI

Day 8 : CIVITAVECCHIA | DISEMBARK | ROME

Disembark in Civitavecchia and transfer to the airport in Rome for return flights
