We invite you to explore the classical treasures and timeless beauty of the Aegean Sea. On our custom-designed voyage from Athens, we will explore myriad facets of ancient Greek society and consider how elements of this culture formed the crucible of our Western civilization. Sailing from Athens, we journey to fabled Troy, where ongoing archaeological work has revealed the remains of a series of towns spanning the centuries. Our journey continues in Istanbul and to Ephesus to explore the remains of the powerful ancient city before visiting several iconic Greek islands. Marvel over the stunning Byzantine frescoes and mosaics at Nea Moni monastery on the island of Chios. In Rhodes we visit the acropolis in Lindos and explore the medieval heritage of the Old Town of Rhodes. In Crete, Zeus’s birthplace, we tour Knossos, home to the Labyrinth of the Minotaur. And in Santorini, we revel in the beauty of its whitewashed villages which stand in stark contrast to the island’s volcanic landscape. Our ship for this voyage is the elegant and congenial all-suite Corinthian II. With her gracious size, limited to 114 guests, and her outstanding services and amenities, Corinthian II is the ideal ship for this remarkable voyage.
Day 1 : ATHENS, Greece
Arrive in Athens and transfer to the King George II Hotel.
Day 2 : ATHENS | PIRAEUS | EMBARK
The birthplace of Western culture and one of the world’s most venerable cities, Athens boasts a plethora of historic monuments. In the morning, tour the Acropolis, including the Erechtheion and the majestic Parthenon, one of the world’s most perfect structures. After lunch at a taverna, continue to the National Archaeological Museum before transferring to the port to embark on Corinthian II. This evening the ship makes the passage through the scenic Corinth Canal.
Day 3 : AT SEA | CANAKKALE, Turkey | TROY | CANAKKALE
After a morning sailing in the Aegean Sea, the ship will enter the Dardanelles (the ancient Hellespont), the narrows that separate Asia from Europe, to call in Canakkale, our gateway for Troy, where ongoing archaeological excavations have revealed nine different layers of cities superimposed in rings on a massive mound rising above the “windswept” Plain of Ilium. It was to one of these cities, as legend has it, that the Greeks fought the Trojans as told by Homer in his Iliad. The city of King Priam finally fell to Odysseus’s ruse of the Trojan Horse.
Day 4 : ISTANBUL
We arrive in Istanbul, the great city of the Byzantine emperors and Ottoman sultans. Approaching the great city from the sea and watching the horizon fill with the spires and towers of Istanbul’s innumerable mosques, palaces, churches, and fortifications is an unforgettable experience. Tour the city’s principal Byzantine and Ottoman landmarks, including the Basilica of Hagia Sophia, the Topkapi Palace, the Blue Mosque, and the Grand Bazaar, where time at leisure will be provided.
Day 5 : CHIOS, Greece
Awake this morning in Chios, the Greek island claiming to be Homer’s birthplace. The island’s volcanic rock formations and deep green valleys forge a landscape of stunning color oppositions and intricate appearances. Visit the 11th-century Monastery of Nea Moni, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important ecclesiastical monuments in Greece. The Monastery sits majestically in a wooded vale and is decorated throughout with exquisite frescoes and mosaics.
Day 6 : KUSADASI, Turkey | EPHESUS | PRIENE | KUSADASI
From Kusadasi, drive in the morning to the ancient city of Ephesus. Settled since the middle of the 2nd millennium B.C., the city was renowned for its great mother goddess, Cybele, later identified as Artemis, or Diana of the Ephesians. In the late 4th century, Ephesus entered a period of extraordinary prosperity and was for a time the most important commercial city in Asia Minor. The immense Hellenistic and Roman excavation site includes the ancient theater, the imposing library of Celsus, the hill houses with their fantastic mosaics and frescoes, and early Byzantine remains. Spend the afternoon at leisure in Kusadasi to explore its myriad shops or alternatively, tour Priene, a 4th-century B.C. city founded in a spectacular setting.
Day 7 : RHODES, Greece | LINDOS | RHODES
The historic island of Rhodes was known in antiquity for its schools of philosophy, rhetoric, and sculpture. Explore Old Town, one of the largest medieval towns in Europe, whose labyrinthine streets and splendid open plazas owe much of their 14th-century charm to the Crusader Knights of St. John. Walk along the Street of the Knights, overflowing with mosaics, finely carved portals, balconies, and coats of arms. Then visit the Archaeological Museum, housed in what was once the Knights’ Great Hospital. In the afternoon, travel to the picturesque village of Lindos. Set high above the village, with spectacular views of the Aegean, are the remains of the Acropolis and the Doric columns of Athena’s Temple, among other structures.
Day 8 : HERAKLION | KNOSSOS | HERAKLION
Crete, Zeus’s legendary birthplace, was home to the Minoan civilization, Europe’s first. A morning tour visits the excavations at Knossos, where the brilliance and refinement of the Minoans are revealed in the excavations found here. The largest palace of the period on Crete, Knossos is a labyrinth of corridors, stairways, and chambers decorated with frescoes illustrating life as it was 4,000 years ago. Continue to the Heraklion Museum, where a vast number of treasures and artifacts from Knossos and other Cretan sites are on display. Enjoy the afternoon at leisure.
Day 9 : SANTORINI
Cruise into the flooded volcanic crater that forms the great circular bay of Santorini. From the sea, enjoy a beautiful view of the village of Phira, set atop a 1,000-foot-high palisade. In the 2nd millennium B.C., volcanic eruptions shrouded the island in a blanket of pumice and ash, preserving many buildings in the town of Akrotiri. At the time of the eruptions, Akrotiri was inhabited by a sophisticated Bronze Age society. Visit the Nomikos Exhibition, where excellent reproductions of the frescoes at Akrotiri are on display, and the Prehistoric Museum of Thira. Continue on to visit the unspoiled town of Oia.
Day 10 : PIRAEUS | DISEMBARK | ATHENS
