Our Glacier Bay Highlights cruise is a perfect shorter getaway cruise in the beautiful remote wilderness of Alaska's Inside Passage. Experience the true meaning of wonder in the soaring sanctuary of Glacier Bay National Park and then travel to the remote wilderness lodges of Denali National Park.
Day 1 : Arrive in Fairbanks
Transfer from the airport to Pike’s Waterfront Lodge. Meet your fellow traveling companions or a casual wine and cheese reception.
Day 2 : Fairbanks Sightseeing, Riverboat
Fairbanks sightseeing includes the University of Alaska Museum and the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. Today’s highlight is an authentic sternwheeler cruise on the Chena and Tanana Rivers. Lunch is included at the historic Pumphouse Restaurant. Stay overnight at Pike’s Waterfront Lodge. BLD
Day 3 : To Kantishna Roadhouse
Transfer to the train station to board a deluxe domed railcar to Denali National Park. Enjoy breakfast on the train. On arrival at Denali Park, you will be met by a guide for the drive deep into the wilderness along the Park’s sole road. The Moose Creek district and Kantishna Roadhouse is nearly 90 miles from the Park entrance. BLD
Day 4 : Exploring around Kantishna
Enjoy the unique wonders of the Park’s backcountry from the privileged perspective of Kantishna Roadhouse. Hiking, wildlife observation, birdwatching and botanizing in a variety of Denali National Park’s landscapes create the foundation for your wilderness experience. Built in 1993, the log lodge is surrounded by 32 full-service cabins. Educational activities are offered every day, and the staff helps plan activities for the following day. Daily guided hikes provide an opportunity to learn about the wildlife and flora from the Roadhouse’s naturalist guides. Mountain bikes are available, and gold panning, dog-sled demonstrations, and fly-fishing are other optional activities.
Day 5 : Denali National Park to Anchorage
Drive out of the Park, watching for Alaska’s big mammals – moose, caribou, Dall sheep, grizzly bears, and more. Board a domed railcar to Anchorage. The route descends from the Alaska Range via Broad Pass and Hurricane Gulch. In Anchorage, transfer to the Sheraton Hotel. BD
Day 6 : Fly Anchorage to Juneau
Transfer to the airport for your flight to Juneau to begin your cruise. BD
Day 7 : Skagway and Haines
Relive the Gold Rush in the picturesque setting of Skagway, where many of the early gold seekers set off with dreams of becoming rich. Catch the Skagway streetcar for a tour of this charming town. Head down mountain-lined Lynn Canal for a visit to Haines, situated on a quiet bay under the Chilkat Mountains. Learn the Haines history and Native culture at Fort William H. Seward. Haines is also known for its large concentration of eagles and its artist population, with works displayed in local galleries. BLD
Day 8 : Glacier Bay
Enter a 3.3 million acre nature wonderland where a National Park Service Ranger will come onboard to offer information on the flora and fauna of this impressive region. Over 200 species of fish are found in Park waters, including all five species of Pacific salmon. About 220 species of birds have been recorded in the Park as well as large populations of land mammals. Have your binoculars and camera with you on deck as the ranger helps you look for mountain goats, brown and black bears, coyote, wolverine, moose, harbor seals, puffins, and murres. BLD
Day 9 : Icy Strait
The annual summer conjunction of currents, bottom topography and tidal energy causes an extraordinary bloom of plant plankton to occur. This bloom creates a biological richness that attracts humpbacks and other marine mammals like sea lions and seals. Captain’s choice cruising may also include inflatable excursion craft outings or bow landings from the Spirit of Glacier Bay, to look for wildlife like brown bear, Sitka black-tailed deer and wolves in the old-growth forests of Sitka spruce and western hemlock. You may see playful otters, black-tailed deer, and bald eagles. BLD
Day 10 : Juneau
Disembark in Juneau. If you have time before your flight we’ll give you ideas for exploring this interesting capital city. Transfer to the airport for your return flight home. B
CHILD DISCOUNT: Kids under 18 save up to 50% off an A or AA cabin and 75% off a AAA cabin on all Glacier Bay itineraries
Please note an additional fuel surcharge of $15 per person per night on ship.
Ship Description: Spirit of Glacier Bay
The Spirit of Glacier Bay is one of the newest additions to our fleet. After a few seasons of exclusive sailing along the eastern seaboard of North America, she is now sailing the stunning waters of Alaska's Glacier Bay area.
The decor is sleek, stylish, and quietly elegant with light wood accents. The Observation Lounge features expansive picture windows, a video and lending library, plus cozy banquettes and conversation circles for getting to know your fellow travelers.
Every stateroom features a wide picture window or porthole, private facilities, a writing desk and ample storage. And when it's time to go outside, guests enjoy generous outside space on the bow and aft decks.
Built in 1984 in Jeffersonville, Indiana, by American craftsmen, the Glacier Bay Clipper’s power is provided by two Detroit diesel propulsion engines rated approximately 500 SHP each, and maneuverability is increased by a 200 HP bowthruster. The ship is equipped with an Electronic Chart Precise Integrated Navigation System (ECPINS). This system combines navigational data on one screen and meets the stringent requirements of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). It was among the first cruise ships to be equipped with this advanced system.
